Poems and Prayers for Other Deities
Even though I have a patron God and Goddess, I am not a monotheist, and I try to honor as many different Deities of the Northern pantheon as time and energy will allow. The following is an abbreviated collection of some of the poems and prayers I have written over time, and I hope you enjoy them and can even find them useful.
A Northern Tradition Serenity Prayer
adapted accordingly on the Serenity Prayer known to various 12-step programs
Frigga, who knows the threads of Wyrd,
grant me Your serenity, to accept what I cannot change.
Thor, protector and provider of man,
grant me the courage to change what I can in my life and in this world.
Odin, seeker of knowledge,
grant me the wisdom to know the difference.
By Njord, who sees the ebb and flow of the tides,
the waters of life which ever change,
let me live one day at a time.
By Frey, God of the World,
let me enjoy one moment at a time.
By Gerda, who gives love and strength to Frey,
let me accept my hardships as the pathway to peace,
taking things as they are and not as they "should" be.
I will trust in the will of the Norns
and know that all is ultimately Owned by Hela and goes to Her,
to be recycled again,
weaving new patterns,
continuing the Web of Wyrd
that is our galaxy, and our Universe.
To Sigyn, for remembering loyalty
Sigyn, I take this time to remember You,
You whose childlike innocence and love of play
brought laughter to the Trickster.
He gave His love to You,
seeing the beauty inside and out,
a soft spot in His heart for Your gentleness.
He tended to that joyful part of You
that had been forgotten
as You lived quietly among the Aesir,
and because of this,
You showed Him loyalty
when misunderstood and scorned,
He was bound
and venom dripped into His eyes.
You stayed with Him,
even when You could have had a life of Your own,
to hold a bowl to catch the venom,
doing what You could to ease His suffering.
It is too easy today
to forget those who have been loyal to us,
those who have been good to us
even when we may not have been deserving of that goodness,
or may not have seen the goodness within ourselves.
Help me Sigyn
to repay kindness with kindness,
to do what I can, even something small,
to help my loved ones in their daily struggles.
Help me Sigyn
to be there even when it is not convenient.
As I pray this,
I send You love and honor
for the sacrifice You have made,
for the loyalty You represent.
May You smile and laugh again,
even after all You have lost
and all You have been through.
Beloved Sigyn,
you deserve to know joy.
Allfather Woden
(triple nonet)
Hail,
Woden,
Allfather!
You are the One
to whom I give praise,
to whom I sing minna.
You sit upon Valaskjalf,
You see the Nine Worlds and know all,
You see even me, and are my friend.
A savior You are not, nor shepherd --
You arm Your folk to save themselves
with wit and wisdom winning,
words as sharp as the sword
We are Your wolf brood,
shapeshifting through
poetry,
howling,
fierce.
Yes,
Hanged One,
You give strength
to Your people,
to Your chosen ones.
I am well fortunate
to call Your Name and hear You -
speaking to me, echoes of runes -
mysteries manifest with magic.
Invocation to Frigga
Hail Frigga, All-Mother,
Who spins the golden thread
the Norns weave into Wyrd.
As Your spinning wheel turns,
You catch glimpses of the future --
yet keep silent.
Hail Frigga, All-Mother,
Queen of the Asynjur!
With You the mundane is sacred --
cooking, cleaning, spinning
to take care of Your kin.
You help make order in the homes of Your women.
You make the home a temple --
a place of peace, of frith, of happiness.
You bless the wombs of the barren
to bring joy
and secure the future of Midgard.
Hail Frigga, All-Mother!
You comfort the motherless
with Your Divine Love
and Your compassion,
for You see us all as children.
Be with us now, Frigga!
Be with us now!
Light-Bringer's Prayer
I have been in the darkness,
I have been enfolded by shadows,
enveloped in screams.
I have been lost in the cold and the dark,
forgotten.
Yet something within me
still reached out to You, Ingvi,
so I could see Your light,
feel Your warmth,
bask in Your presence.
Even in the depth of my despair,
I believed there had to be something better,
some good left in this world,
and You pulled me to Yourself,
You came to me.
Let me absorb Your light, Ingvi,
so my pierced, broken heart
can be filled with Your light
so that it spills out of the broken parts,
and shines on all.
Let the light shine on those who are in darkness
and know there is something beyond this.
Let the light within me
give knowledge of what is around,
and guidance to what is ahead,
as well as comforting warmth.
Let me serve as a beacon of Your light
here in Midgard,
Ingvi Frey, Golden Giver,
and let that light reflect back on You,
so You may have joy
in our discovery of joy.
Words for Gerda
Though it is widely told of how Frey sacrificed His sword to win You,
Your sacrifice is rarely spoken of,
my fair Gerda.
I know that You left Your world and Your people
to live with Frey, and be in His presence.
You have lived among the Vanir,
and among the Ljossalfar,
away from Your family and friends,
away from the places You know,
and I feel Your loneliness and Your sense of being lost.
I know that You have stilled Your own womb
to not cause strife through the Tree.
For the love of the Golden Lord,
You put aside all that You had,
to be the darkness that gives rest and regeneration to His bright light,
to share secret laughter,
and kiss away the tears of the Tree's pain that He wants no one else to see.
You speak little of Your own pain,
and also of the joy that Frey gives You.
You speak little because even if You wanted to speak,
many humans care not to hear it,
they have long forgotten the Goddess of the garden,
who finds solace in the subtle growth of herbs,
who tends well to their spirits.
I remember You, Gerda,
and ask that You help me with the sacrifices I have made,
the losses and times of being lost I have endured,
for the care of my own love,
for the fulfillment of my own Wyrd.
Help me to bear these burdens with dignity,
even as I remember You,
and honor You.
A prayer I wrote to ask Gerda's help as I "adjust" to the State of California, to be with my beloved.
Sigyn's Song
This bowl I bear, the one thing left from when I was a child,
I give it to catch the venom that would burn my beloved's eyes,
I give it to pour the venom and my heart breaks at his screams,
I pour my tears at what he's seen, and all the shattered dreams.
He loves the child in me that was never wanted by my own,
fostered by the Vanir yet still separate and somewhat alone,
and as I catch the snake's poison, my children come to mind,
innocent they were, and the carnage left behind,
but all the children of the Worlds are still left at risk,
and to see them come to harm is no sane person's wish,
yet many are unsafe and their inner gifts are taken
by unthinking monsters for whom Our Monsters awaken.
I see the child within each being, I have compassion and love,
but do not underestimate my anger, do not think I am above
harm for harm, wrath for wrath, I will pour out my bowl
and drown you with guilt, the tears of your forsaken soul.
Fulltrui (a song for Frey)
I dedicate myself to You, Frey
Lord of the Dance of Life
I offer all that I am
All that I was
and all that I shall become
to Your radiant glory
I was fulltrui to You
before I even so spoke the words of our bond
You, like a friend to me
through all these years
You, a lover to me
to my aching heart
May Your frith reign in me
Not necessarily "love and light"
but as spreading cheer
to those who are downtrodden
And taking a stand for peace
be it my peace of mind
or the well-being of others
or of the land itself
May all that I offer to You
bring a smile to Your face
God of the World
Fairest One
For You have made me smile
time and time again
with Your many blessings
I will stand with You
and together
our love shall conquer all
Transcendent Love
In the field They met
She looked into His eyes
Saw the light within
And opened up Her thighs
As They came together
Their fluid bathed the ground
Love burst from Their hearts
And made the Worlds go round
Frey who laughs and dances
Gerda silent and still
Frey gives joy and plenty
Gerda gives strength and will
They embrace the lovers
Who transcend boundaries
Who work against the odds
To know the path of ecstasy
They embrace the givers
Who give from the love they share
To heal the barren lands
To protect, provide, and care
A Gift for a Gift
To you, Ingvi Frey, I give thanks.
I give You my words, this writing, to show my appreciation,
to show Your goodness.
You honored my offerings when I had little to spare,
You honored the time I spent with You,
giving You my adoration,
and You gave me new life:
a move to a different land,
to be with my beloved,
to start fresh
and gain health and wealth,
frith and mirth,
an enjoyment of living life.
When all hope seemed lost,
You made a way out of no way.
You desire that the people of Midgard
know what it is to truly live.
You transform tears into gentle rain,
You transform shit
into fertilizer to feed the soil.
You transform smiles into sunshine,
laughter into cooling winds.
Your blood spills on the soil,
You are cut down in compassion
for the hungry people,
the pain of Your sacrifice
is the pain of the hunger of all the Nine Worlds,
the hunger of empty stomachs
and empty lives.
Your blood feeds the Earth,
you walk the Hel Road
so we may stay alive.
The deeds of our labor bring a harvest,
and we share the firstfruits with You,
in frith and merriment,
knowing You are God of the World,
giver of good things,
You rejoice with our gladness.
I will always be grateful to You,
for every day there is at least one thing to be thankful for,
if not more.
Even when I find shadows,
I will never fail to see the light,
the light that is in You,
the light You have given to my world.
To You, Ingvi Frey, I give my life,
for You share Your life with me.
A gift for a gift, Giefu,
an embrace,
You connect me to the Worlds,
and to life.

Freysgydhia
Here I solidify this irrevocable oath
to serve as Frey's priestess, His Godwoman, His Gydhia.
May I prove worthy of my calling,
worthy to Frey,
and worthy to the worthy folk He sends my way:
to serve the folk who love my Lord,
who love the Ones my Lord loves.
To light their way
to come home,
to a safe place,
to rest.
To tend the hearth fire,
to bless the food,
to bring smiles and laughter,
to give thanks
for the many blessings in life.
To serve my Beloved Golden One,
to open my arms
and hold Him close to my beating heart,
here He may find shelter
and solace
when He is pained by seeing
His people in distress,
not enjoying the world He has given them.
To open my legs
and give myself,
our shared passion
giving us pleasure,
an exchange of life force
that we give back to the world.
To work on His behalf,
speaking out against unfrithful deeds,
that which steals people's joy,
speaking for the goodness of the Earth,
acting to nurture and provide for the folk,
and nurture and provide for the world.
I give of my body,
my hugging arms,
my healing hands,
my voice and my words and my song,
my sex,
for my body comes from His Earth,
my body is a temple.
I serve Frey because I love Him.
To know Him is to love Him.
I serve His folk because He loves them.
They are a part of Frey, and so I love them.
To serve Frey I will sacrifice myself
even as He serves us as a sacrifice,
spilling His blood upon the soil --
I break my will, my very self
so His people can be nourished.
