Sculpture Gallery

These are sculptures made from Sculpey brand clay depicting the Vanir, Jotnar, and Aesir.  I don't claim to make the most beautiful sculptures ever, but they are made with a lot of love and show my fondness for each Deity.

Freyja, the Vanadis

A sculpture made of Freyja, Vanadis.  She has long strawberry blonde tresses and blue eyes, and a full pouty mouth.  She's dressed in pink but as you can see, quite busty.  She has a Brisingamen around Her neck, and is holding a mead horn to represent Her role as Valkyrie, and Priestess (Gydhia) of the Aesir.

Frey, the Golden One

Sculpey made of Frey, my (longtime) patron God.  A friend of mine commented that "He looks like He belongs in Jethro Tull".  I usually see Him with long dark-golden hair and beard, and I put Him in a green robe (there is a strategically located bulge in the robe, to be "correct"), with a torc about His neck.  In one hand He holds an antler (His weapon of choice, as He gave up His sword for love), in another He holds a loaf of bread marked with an Ing rune.  The sculpey as a whole emphasizes Frey's role as an Earth God, and as protector and provider.  So far He hasn't complained :)

Gerda, Beloved Etin-Bride of Frey

A sculpey of Frey's etin-bride, Gerda.  Gerda is my patron Goddess, and though much less flamboyant and less talkative than Freyja, Gerda has Her own wisdom to teach if one is willing to be patient and respectfully observe.  I dressed Gerda modestly, in a burgundy color (as She prefers), and Her dress has a train in back.  She also has two long dark braids, green eyes, and full lips.  She wears a headcovering as is also Her preference, and is holding a golden bowl which can be used to bless seeds prior to planting, or for little written prayers for the details of life that Others might miss.

Loki, the Trickster

The infamous Trickster, who has been a wonderful... if interesting... friend to me over the years.  He has funny flaming hair, and a slightly bashful head position like, "Oh, shucks."  He's holding a golden object in His outstretched hand that could be... anything.  He's also in a rather fancy (and androgynous) costume with shoulderpads and ruffles, and has golden bells on His big floppy shoes.  Making this sculpture was without a doubt the most aggravating one, as He literally came apart after the first baking with His left eye and right arm fallen to the cookie sheet -- "Guess which two Gods I'm trying to imitate, lulz." -- and then was perfectly reasonable after I ergi-fied His outfit.  Thanks, Loki.  Love You, too.  (I guess I should just be grateful my oven didn't explode.)

Loki with Sigyn, Keeper of Innocent Loyalty

Loki is presenting His golden object to Sigyn, who is dressed modestly in green, and two pigtails, holding a balloon (or maybe cotton candy?) and pouting.  I purposely gave Her big brown eyes and a cute pout, which is Her "please gimmeeeee pleeeeeaaaase" face, as many who have worked closely with Sigyn can confirm, yes, She does indeed do that... and is irresistible.  Here Sigyn's innocence is captured, as one who brings joy and laughter to the Trickster... Loki being a complex character and not all lulz, all the time.

Njord, Blameless Ruler of Men

Njord looks rather similar to His son, with the same dark golden hair (a bit shorter) and beard.  He is clad in a blue robe to symbolize His connection to the sea, and His feet disappear into the waves.  On His head He wears a crown to represent His role as King of the Vanir, and in one hand wields a battle-axe (His weapon) and in the other a chalice, for the hospitality the Vanir are well known for.

Holda, Crone Goddess

I believe Frau Holda (Dame Holle) is one of the Vanir Deities, see Grimm for more details.  She has the white hair and pointy nose of a Crone, but also has blue flax flowers in Her hair, and is garbed in a neat blue and white dress.  She's shaking a white feather bed to bring the snows.  Below is a side profile of Holda where you can see a broom and a cauldron (for the role of the kitchen witch, she who keeps a sacred home).

Ran, Goddess of the Open Seas

Sculpey of Ran.  I added a small amount of blue to flesh color, to give a bluish tinge to Her skin, as well as blue hair, and blue, um... nipples.  (I SAID NIPPLES ON TEH INTERNETS, OH NOES.)  She has a gold necklace, and a gold coin in Her hand.  I decided to give Her a mermaid form although YMMV with how you see Her.

Aegir, Brewer of the Ale

Ran's husband, Aegir, who has bluer (!) skin, red eyes, and white hair, and a gold necklace and arm bands, as well as a darker blue merman tail.  He is holding a mead horn of His own, to illustrate the hospitality He shows to the Aesir and to men.

Hela, Lady Death

For Hela, I made Her half black, half white, in a plain and nondescript grey dress and extremely thin, gaunt form.  I also gave Her grey hair, and completely blue eyes (think the Fremen in "Dune").  She is holding a tiny bone skull in Her hands.

Angrboda, Hag of the Iron Wood

Angrboda, first wife of Loki and Mother of Fenrisulf, Jormundgand, and Hela.  I gave Her blood-red hair and intense green eyes, and a long, pointy nose.  She is wearing a wolf cloak clasped with an "iron" brooch, and a leather pantsuit, with wolf-fur shoes.  She wields a spear made from "iron wood", and it so happened that when She came out of the oven I accidentally got a cut, and took that as a sign to offer Her blood, which I gave to Her spear.

Surt the Black

I honor Surt as Loki's foster-father, and as the oldest Being currently alive in the Nine Worlds (does not count Ymir who is dead, does not count Yggdrasil which is separate and whole unto Itself).  I added a bit of black to flesh tone to give Him sooty skin, and a black beard and red eyes.  He's clad in black, and the cell phone pics really don't do justice to the lava He's standing on or the flame in His hands.

Laufey, Lady of the Leafy Isle

Laufey, Loki's mum.  Although I know She is an etin (whose name means "Leafy", ergo probably a tree-etin), She took on a very Fae quality in the sculpture.  I gave Her copper hair adorned with a crown of leaves, a two-toned green dress, and She is holding a "wooden" (clay, really) staff.  For one of the Jotnar I'd say Laufey appears to me as being petite, and if ever a Jotun could be Fae, it would likely be Laufey, which of course Loki would inherit from her ;)

Jormundgand, the World Serpent

For Jormundgand I made a long and windy snake-like figure made of purple and turquoise clay.  The cell pic really does not do the color combination justice.  Xe also has yellow eyes, and an expression on xyr face that has been described as "Kermit-like".

Jord, Mother of Thor

Jord, etinous consort of Odin and mother of Thor.  The cell pics don't do Her justice, but I combined brown and green Sculpey to make a swirly pattern for Her skin (grass + soil), and strategically placed pink and yellow flowers on Her... parts.  I wanted to make Her womanly and distinctly Earthy (the Jotnar are under no obligation to appear more human-like to make humans feel comfortable, so this is as good as it gets) while still beautiful in Her own way.

Thor, Friend of Man

For Thor's Sculpey, I gave Him long black hair and a copper beard, as many men of Celtic and Germanic (and yes, Slavic too) descent have dark hair and reddish beards.  He has a red top and black pants, and large boots.  I made sure His hammer's handle was small, and that He had something akin to gloves on His hands for wielding the strength of the hammer.  In all I think He came out very cute.

Sunna and Mani, the Divine Lights

On the left is Mani, the Moon God, and to the right is Sunna, the Sun Goddess.  Mani has dark hair and is clad in white and blue, holding a faintly sparkly crescent moon.  Sunna is clad in orange, with long golden tresses, and is holding a sunwheel.

Frigga, the Allmother

Frigga, wife of Odin and Queen of the Aesir, wearing a white dress and blue cloak.  In one hand She holds a key, and in the other a distaff, to symbolize Her rulership over the home and hearth, and the sacred femme.

Aurboda, Mother of Gerda

This sculpture of Aurboda was inspired by Ravenari's portrayal of Aurboda for the Giants' Tarot.  Here Aurboda is in raven form.  Aurboda is the mother of Gerda (Frey's wife) as well as one of the handmaidens of Mengloth, the healing Goddess of the Jotnar.

The Norns, Sisters of Wyrd

This is the most complex Sculpey I have done so far and took approximately 2 1/2 hours to make.  In the center is Urd, Norn of the past, with long dark hair and a white dress.  To the left is Verdandi, Norn of the present, with red hair and a red dress.  To the right of Skuld, Norn of the future, hooded in black with a black dress and white "blind" eyes.  The center holds a mirror to depict the Waters of the Well.  The choice of colors for the Norns' attire was deliberate.

Bestla, Mother of Odin

I portray Bestla as a small and elderly-but-youthful woman, wearing a blue dress and wielding a scepter in one hand (for rulership) and an evergreen plant in the other (for Her connection to the Green World).

Gunnlod, Keeper of the Sacred Mead

A Sculpey done of Gunnlod, etin-bride of Odin and mother, by Him, of Bragi.  Keeper of Odhroerir, the mead of inspiration, Gunnlod is as desirable as the mead She brews, dressed in "sexy red", and with flowing copper hair to match.  She holds a chalice filled with mead (what else?).

Bragi, the Divine Skald

Sculpey of Bragi, the son of Gunnlod and Odin, and the most renowned of skalds and scops.  He is clad in purple garb and is holding a lyre.

Skadhi, the Huntress

A sculpture of Skadhi, clad in a white dress and hooded fur cloak, wearing snowshoes and carrying a bow and arrow.  I think there is something of a Saami quality to Her face and colouring, which pleases me as Her father, Thjazi, may be the same as the Saami Deity Tjatsi.

Idunna, Keeper of the Golden Apples

Idunna has blonde hair in a ponytail and is wearing a yellow dress (with bare feet sticking out), holding a branch bearing the sacred golden apples that keep the Aesir healthy and strong.

Tyr, the Just

Tyr, wearing a crown and a red robe over black garb -- colors I associate with justice -- displaying the hand He sacrificed to safely bind Fenris, protecting both the wolf and the Aesir.  He has something of a serious expression.
